I woke up early this morning after a late evening hosting a fabulous party for friends. And I can’t help but contemplate what it means to practice full engagement. The first ideas about full engagement that come to mind are to be enthralled, present in the moment and focused on what you are doing, saying, or hearing. To be riveted, excited, enamored, in awe are some more ideas that come to mind. To get knee deep and bath yourself in something is full engagement.
Now, that last thought was a little weird but it has an element of hope because it includes that aspect of making a choice. The first few ideas are things beyond self control. How could someone manage what or who turns them on or excites them? However, it is possible to choose to fully engage or not to. I can choose to get wet and dirty and messy and make mistakes and be covered in life’s joy and show enthusiasm, or I can choose not to. Meaning its all within my power to make a decision to fully engage in what I do. Meaning I can choose the stuff that’s great for me and choose not to engage in the toxic. Now this doesn’t mean I can or should avoid the things I have to deal with to keep my life humming along. It just means I can be choosy about what I give my energy to, always leaving room for the fantastic. Comprise the masterpiece that is your life. What’s to lose? A more joyous, expressive, adventurous life?
